Commission on Children & Families
Citizens and professionals serving on the Commission on Children and Families are responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan which guides the development of initiatives and supports to improve the lives of children and families. Commission partners include Sherman County School District, North Central Education Service District, Sherman County Juvenile Department, Department of Human Services (welfare, health and social support agency), Wasco/Sherman Public Health Department, and Mid-Columbia Center for Living (local mental health agency).
The Commission collaborates with a number of state and county level agencies and organizations, non-profits, the faith community, business and other entities interested in improving supports for children and families in our communities.
The Sherman County Commission on Children and Families and the Prevention Coalition currently provide funding for Columbia Gorge CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Gilliam/Sherman/Wheeler Home Visiting Network - Healthy Start Program, North Sherman Preschool, Sherman Preschool, ABC Huskies Day Care, Cougar Camp, Little Wheats, Inc., Sherman Junior/Senior High School - "The Pack", Sherman Junior/Senior High School - Intramural Program, Sherman Junior/Senior High School - Co-Curricular Back to School Event, Sherman Junior/Senior High School Leadership Class, "Paw Pals" (Lunch Buddy Mentoring Program),Summer Youth Programs (Excellent Adventures, Kid Quest and Swim bus), Missoula Children's Theatre, Project Alert and Drug, Alcohol Free Graduation Event and coordinates the Oregon Youth Conservation Corp (OYCC) Summer Youth Work Crews in Sherman County. Other projects funded through the Commission on Children and Families and Sherman County Prevention Coalition one-time funding have included: Intercambio, 6th Grade Outdoor School, Sherman Junior Hoops, High School Tutoring Program, Band Instruments, Sherman Junior/Senior High School (Cheer Clinic, School Assemblies, Track Tent), Bicycle Helmets, Creating Young Writers, Swimming Lessons, ABC Huskies Day Care Building Renovation Project, Improvements at the Fairgrounds (Swine Bar, Sheep Barn and Playground Equipment), School Supplies for 4-H Summer Camps, Educational and Cultural Diversity Materials for Preschools, SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) Reading Program, Arts and Education Activities in Elementary Schools, Hygiene Kits, Yellow Dyno, South Sherman Parent Teacher Organization, North Sherman Parent Teacher Organization, Brad Henning - Life Resource Presentation and more.
The Sherman County Prevention Coalition is a committee of the
Sherman County Commission on Children and Families whose primary focus is
the prevention of underage drinking and tobacco and other drug use. This
committee develops and implements a prevention plan every two years and recommends
funding targeted at projects and programs identified in this plan.
